Social Development and Human Security
As one of Chulalongkorn University’s missions is to use the knowledge gained to better the country’s development for the long run. This is because our university emphasized the importance of sustainable social development, which begins with the seven fundamental human security and social development aspects. This belief and concept is also aligned with the United Nations Deveopment Programme (UNDP). Therefore, the Social Development and Human Security research cluster was established in order to gain cooperation from scholars and experts from various disciplines to conduct research and academic works focusing on relevant human security issues in Thailand and neighboring countries. Recent research projects funded in the year 2016 – 2017 are based on 7 sub-areas within the human security issues as summarized.
Health
Health is a major component of human life. World Health Organization has defined health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. This definition emphasizes that good health does not confine only to the disease-free state. It also emphasizes the importance of mental and social well-being.
In appreciation of the importance of health, Chulalongkorn University has established the “CU Health Research Cluster”. The main objectives are to conduct comprehensive research programs which increase our understanding of disease processes and to develop new methods for diagnosis and treatment. We focus mainly on pathological conditions that are highly prevalent in our country and this region.
